I am the girl that hopes there is a softball game on homecoming. I would much rather have on my legguards, dirt coating my skin, fresh, bloody scrapes on my elbows, team by my side than to be partying the night away in a fancy chiffon dress, buffed nails and 2 hours worth of beauty treatments. I am in a relationship with softball and perfectly content. For a long time, I was in a very trying personal situation and softball was part of my coping mechanism, my escape. It has always been there when I needed to be picked up. Without the game I would probably have made some very poor decisions and my life could have taken a very different course. I was bullied in middle school, I had braces and my feet seemed to both be left and wanted to independently turn in opposite directions. As a result, I didn't have many friends, but when I played softball, I wasn't that weird kid, rather I was part of something bigger than my self, a team full of girls just like me that were often misunderstood and under appreciated for our style choice of sweats and softball camp t-shirts and our ability to throw like a girl.
Softball has been so important to me and I could talk about it for hours, but I have other interests too. I love learning and school.. ALOT! I smile while doing Calculus problems and taking AP Government notes. I do polynomial equations between pitches while squatting in my catcher's gear behind the plate in championship games. I rehash the Lincoln-Douglas debates right before I smash that perfect pitch over the fence in left center. Yeah that's me, anything someone is willing to teach me I am ready to learn. I also love to write. Writing to me is such a healthy way of expressing myself and my love of words and the way they flow together creating stories is nothing short of magical. Reading is a wonderful compliment to writing and the local Barnes and Noble store's stock of books is never quite safe with me around. I also have a musical side. I am certainly no Mozart but I can squeak with the best of them when playing my Clarinet and enjoying the comraderie of the Symphonic Band crowd.
When I have free time (that happens, right?) I enjoy spending time with my dad and stepmom. We watch movies and debate all the topics of the world, not sure we ever solve anything but the discussion is always lively. My dad shares my pursuit of knowledge and the two of us press each other to the limit in out intellectual duels. His quick wit and vast knowledge makes my brain hurt at times but I always learn something I didn't know before and generally walk away with a different and more balanced perspective on the topic of the day. Hanging with my softball girls is also one of my favorite things. I know that goes without saying but I want to make sure I get that shout out to them of how important they are to me. Sleepovers, complete with an endless supply of Butterfingers are the best, just can't stay up too late you know.. warmups start at 7:30am in the next distant town where our competition will be waiting... don't worry WE WILL BE READY!
